Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No referral is needed to schedule. If your specific plan requires one, we’ll let you know.
Will my insurance cover the visit?
Many plans cover lactation visits. We’re in-network with most major commercial plans, AHCCCS, and TRICARE. We don’t promise coverage in advance, and because we often see families the same day or next morning, we can’t always check benefits first. We never delay care to do it.
Do you accept AHCCCS and TRICARE?
Yes. We are in-network with most major commercial plans, AHCCCS, and TRICARE. If your plan needs a referral, we’ll let you know.
What if I’m uninsured, or want to self-pay?
We offer self-pay with a written good-faith estimate up front, plus payment plans and HSA/FSA. Cost should never keep a family from care.
How much is a visit if I pay out of pocket?
Our self-pay price is $185 for a breastfeeding medicine couplet visit, with mom and baby seen together. You get a written good-faith estimate up front, and we offer payment plans and HSA/FSA.
How soon can I be seen?
Same-week visits are usually available for new families, and we triage urgent concerns like mastitis or a baby who isn’t feeding quickly.
Are you open on weekends or holidays?
Yes. We offer Saturday and most-holiday availability, when many practices are closed. We are not open on Sundays. Call us for the current day’s hours.
Where is your clinic located?
Our clinic is at 3112 N Country Club Rd, Tucson, AZ 85716. We also offer home visits across the Tucson area and telehealth.
How do I check in for my first visit?
Self check-in is required at least 24 hours before your visit, and you can do it from home on your own time using the check-in link we send you.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Your insurance card, any pump and flanges you use, and your questions. If you can, feed on your usual schedule so we can watch a typical feed.
Do you see my baby and me together?
Yes. We see mom and baby together as a feeding pair in one coordinated visit, which is how we find what’s really going on.
Do you do tongue-tie releases?
We evaluate carefully and, when a release is truly indicated, use a precise, minimally invasive frenotomy rather than a laser. Just as often we find a release isn’t needed and address the real cause instead.
Can you help with mastitis or a plugged duct quickly?
Yes. We treat mastitis and plugged ducts, often same-day, and can prescribe antibiotics when they are truly needed while protecting your supply.
Do you help with newborn jaundice?
Yes. We do an in-office bilirubin (TCB) check, a quick and painless light reading, and can arrange at-home phototherapy with provider oversight, alongside a feeding plan.
Do you offer home visits?
Yes, across Southern Arizona, including Rita Ranch, Vail, Oro Valley, Marana, East Tucson, Davis-Monthan, Tanque Verde, Sahuarita, Green Valley, South Tucson, and Sierra Vista. You get the same medical care we provide in clinic.
Do you offer telehealth visits?
Yes. We offer telehealth for concerns that do not need an in-person exam, including quick follow-ups. Home visits are available too.
Can you care for my newborn if we haven’t chosen a pediatrician yet?
Yes. We provide newborn and transitional care during the first two months while you establish a pediatric home, and we help you choose a pediatrician and hand off cleanly.
Can I be seen before my baby arrives?
Yes. Our prenatal lactation plan helps you prepare, which is especially useful if you have had prior feeding challenges, low supply, or other risk factors.
Do you prescribe medication?
Yes. We are nurse-practitioner-led, so we can examine, diagnose, test, and prescribe when it is needed, for both mom and baby.
Do you replace my pediatrician?
No. We provide newborn and feeding-focused medical care and coordinate closely with your pediatrician, but we are not a long-term pediatric home. We do not give vaccines in clinic; immunizations and well-child care belong with your pediatrician or pediatric home. If you haven’t chosen a pediatrician yet, we’ll help match you with one and hand off cleanly so there’s no gap in your baby’s care.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. We have Spanish-speaking providers and staff. Let us know your preference when you schedule.
Can you help with pumping or going back to work?
Yes. We help with flange fit, pump settings, building a stash, and a back-to-work plan that fits your goals.
What if I want to combination feed or wean?
Your goals lead. We support breastfeeding, combination feeding, pumping, and weaning, without judgment. Formula is never a failure.
Can you help with low milk supply or oversupply?
Yes. We evaluate low milk supply and oversupply, including a medical workup when it is indicated, and we build a plan around your feeding goals.
Can you help if my baby is gaining weight slowly?
Yes. We assess weight gain and how well your baby transfers milk, look for the cause, and put a feeding plan in place while coordinating with your pediatrician.
My baby is gassy, fussy, or seems to have reflux. Can you help?
Yes. We evaluate gassy, fussy, and reflux-type symptoms as part of a full feeding assessment, so we can sort feeding-related causes from other causes and make a plan.
Do you help with nipple or breast pain?
Yes. We treat nipple pain, vasospasm, and thrush, and we look for the underlying cause rather than only easing the symptom.
Can you check how much milk my baby is getting?
Yes. Watching a full feed and assessing milk transfer is a routine part of a couplet visit, so we can see how feeding is really going.
What is breastfeeding medicine, and how is it different from a lactation consultant?
We are nurse-practitioner-led, and our providers are also IBCLCs, so the medical evaluation and the lactation expertise sit with the same clinician. That means we can examine, diagnose, test, and prescribe, not only offer lactation guidance.
Do you host a support group?
Yes. We host a postpartum support group where families connect and get feeding support. See our support group page for details.
Are you part of a larger practice?
Yes. Barrio Babies is part of Barrio Healthcare.
What can I do in the middle of the night if I am struggling?
Our Help Right Now guide walks through common 3am feeding worries. For an urgent medical concern, call us, and if it is an emergency, call 911.
